What Is A Dental Implant?

What Is A Dental Implant?

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. It’s designed to support a custom-made crown that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.
When a tooth is lost, the jawbone in that area can begin to shrink over time. Dental implants are placed into the jawbone to provide support for a replacement tooth while helping maintain the structure of your smile.
Once healed, the implant becomes a stable foundation for your new tooth. There’s nothing to remove, no adhesives to worry about, and no special maintenance beyond your normal oral hygiene routine.
There are several implant options available, depending on how many teeth are missing and your individual needs. During your consultation, we’ll help determine the most suitable treatment for you.
single dental implants

Single Dental Implants

A single dental implant may be recommended when one tooth is missing. The implant is placed into the jawbone to act as a replacement tooth root, before supporting a custom-made crown designed to blend naturally with your smile.
Unlike a bridge, a dental implant does not rely on neighbouring teeth for support. The result is a secure, fixed solution designed to restore both function and appearance.

Implant Bridge

When several teeth are missing in a row, an implant-supported bridge may offer a fixed alternative to removable options. Rather than replacing each tooth individually, dental implants are strategically placed to support multiple replacement teeth.
Designed to restore function and appearance, implant-supported bridges can help you eat, speak, and smile with greater confidence while preserving the health of the surrounding teeth.
Full Mouth Fixed Implant Solutions

Full Mouth Fixed Implant Solutions

If you’re missing most or all of your teeth, full-arch dental implant solutions such as All-On-4 Plus® may provide an alternative to traditional removable dentures. Using strategically placed dental implants, a full arch of replacement teeth can be supported with a fixed restoration.

Designed to improve comfort, function, and confidence, full-arch dental implants allow you to enjoy a secure smile without the need to remove your teeth each night.
Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-Supported Dentures

If you’re missing most or all of your teeth, implant-supported dentures may offer a more secure alternative to conventional dentures. Supported by dental implants, this treatment is designed to improve stability and comfort while helping you enjoy everyday activities with greater confidence.
Unlike fixed full-arch implant solutions, implant-supported dentures can be removed for cleaning and maintenance

Initial Exam & Taking of Digital Records

To start your implant journey, we will take a full set of photos of your teeth and face and some xrays including a 3D CBCT scan. We will also conduct a thorough intra-oral examination to assess your overall oral health and eligibility for dental implants. The goal of this appointment is to identify which treatment options are best for you moving forward.

Dental Implant Placement

Once your treatment plan has been finalised, we'll schedule your dental implant procedure. A straightforward implant placement may take as little as 30–45 minutes, while more complex cases can require additional time depending on your individual treatment needs.

Patient comfort is always a priority. We offer a range of options to help you feel relaxed throughout your procedure, including sedation and general anaesthetic for suitable patients. Following treatment, we'll see you for a review appointment to monitor healing and ensure your recovery is progressing as expected.

Healing and Final Procedure

In most cases, we need to wait three months for the healing process to finish and for your dental implant to integrate with your body. At this point we will get you to return for two visits to insert your final teeth. In some cases we’re able to complete this quicker.

For full arch or All on 4 Plus implants, you can have your teeth within 24-48 hours of the implant surgery. On the other hand, dental implants that require bone grafting or soft tissue grafting will take a longer time to heal. Each case is uniquely different.
